Stacking Basics

Last updated: September 17, 2026

"Stacking" just means combining ingredients. The community makes it sound like chemistry; the safe version is closer to cooking: add one thing at a time, taste as you go, write down what you did.

Rule 1: One variable at a time

Start with a single ingredient at a research-backed dose. Give it a fair trial — weeks for slow-onset ingredients like bacopa, days for fast-acting ones like caffeine + theanine. Keep simple notes: date, dose, sleep, subjective focus (1–5). Only when you understand ingredient #1 do you add ingredient #2. This is the only method that tells you what actually did anything.

Rule 2: Don't double-dose stimulants

The most common stacking mistake: a caffeinated stack plus coffee plus a pre-workout, totaling 500+ mg of caffeine, followed by a panicked article about "nootropic side effects." Add up ALL your caffeine sources before adding any. If a stack contains caffeine, that coffee counts.

Rule 3: Respect the unknowns

Combinations are usually not researched — even when the individual ingredients are. Two safe ingredients combined are not automatically a safe combination, especially alongside prescription medications. This is the single biggest reason to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before stacking, not after.

A sane starter stack (single ingredients)

  1. Weeks 1–2: caffeine (your normal coffee) + l-theanine ~200 mg. The best-studied pairing in the category.
  2. Weeks 3+: add bacopa monnieri ~300 mg/day standardized extract or don't — only if the theanine trial taught you something worth building on.
  3. Stop rule: if you feel nothing after a fair trial, that's data. Not every ingredient works for every person, and "modest at best in healthy people" is the honest baseline.

What not to stack

Don't combine multiple stimulant sources. Don't stack exotic research chemicals with thin human safety data. Don't stack anything while on prescription medication without your clinician's explicit okay. And don't stack to compensate for four hours of sleep — fix the sleep; it's the highest-EV "nootropic" that exists.

Not medical advice. Supplements can interact with medications and conditions. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement. If you notice declining memory or cognitive function, see a clinician rather than self-treating.
